Vila Nova de Gaia

On the other side of Douro, it is Vila Nova de Gaia, where are the cellars of most of the producers of Porto. With in bonus, of magnificent views on the old town of Porto, on the other side of the water.

Amateur of wine or not, you should absolutely test Porto!


The region of production is the one of "Douro", with 40.000 hectares. The climate is rough and hostile to the vineyard (with 3 months of strong heat which can reach 40 degrees) and nevertheless we develop famous Porto there.



There are three various types of porto wine:

  • White: Results of an invention of the beginning of the 20th century. While red wines are one discoveries of the 18th century. There is soft white Porto but also dry even very dry.

  • Red: They are the noblest wines. Stemming from a single picking and from a reason classified in it pleased high category (there are 6 categories in all). Porto red are wines which we find as bottle of table during a meal in family or between friends.

  • Tawny: It is wines which aged at least 5 years in barrels of 500 liter. These wines oxidized and were classified according to their age.

About the price:

To visit an interactive museum tour, guided tour and wine tasting, it's 12€ per person. It depend where you go but in Calem, it's that price. But you can find a lot of cellar such as Taylor's cellar, Caves Churchill, Caves Ferreira, Graham's port Lodge, Caves Sandeman, ...
